The Promised Kingdom

Not only did God promise Adam and Eve He would send a rescuer to undo what sin caused in the world, and not only did God promise Abraham and Sarah that one of their offspring would be a blessing to the nations, but God also promised to David that He would establish the kingdom of his offspring forever. Solomon, David’s son, did sit on the throne, but shortly after his death the kingdom was divided and it was never as strong as it was under him. Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of the story. In Matthew 1:1 we read that Jesus is the Son of David and that same Jesus now sits on the throne of His forever kingdom! Believers of Jesus are citizens of that kingdom and experience some of its benefits now. Yet, we wait for the full consummation of the kingdom at Jesus’ return. In the meanwhile, we’re called to “walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.” 1 Thessalonians 2:12
