There is a point at which the created must humbly accept that he is not the Creator; that he does not understand the divine mind, the divine plan, the divine ways. This seems to be Paul’s conclusion to the whole matter of God’s sovereignty in election in Romans 9-11, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?’” Romans 11:33-34 This passage in Romans ought to serve us a healthy dose of humble pie as we live in the tension of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility.
