Family worship is a Christian discipline like any other. But it’s a long-lost discipline. It is obedience to Deuteronomy 6:6-7. “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
Today I’d like to share some thoughts from the Bible about what it looks like to so elevate Jesus’ mission in our lives. When we talk about the mission of Jesus in the world you might think missionary, pastor, evangelist or seminary professor. These are not what I have in mind. Or at least not the only things I have in mind.
just as you have nothing to boast about in your salvation because it was not in any way based on your righteousness, in the same way, you have no reason to fear losing it. And you don’t have to prove you were worthy of it. God made you worthy. God made you righteous when He declared you to be so.
1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Are you spiritually lazy and apathetic? Don’t be surprised when the enemy takes you off-guard. Be alert!
Hopefully by now you have heard the phrase “every member a missionary” or you’ve seen the hashtag #everymemberamissionary, and you’re asking yourself, “How can I be a faithful missionary?” If you’re not asking that question, I want to invite you to do so.
Unfortunately, for many, Christmas is a time that often fails to deliver on expectations of peace, hope, and joy. Have you ever stopped to ponder why that is? We expect shiny presents to deliver joy. We expect our family and friends to provide peace for at least a moment at Christmas. We hope for a better outcome in our families, communities, workplace, government, and our world in the coming year, and we hope that the magic of the Christmas season will be the catalyst that sparks such a reversal of fortune. Each year all of the above fails to deliver. Why? Because they can’t. Finite things and people can’t produce infinite peace, hope, and joy.
