I recently visited with a member of my church and the topic of parental discipline came up. She asked me for help understanding when to discipline and how to get to the heart of the matter. In a sermon she listened to over the weekend she heard me say that parents should strive for more than behavior modification; we should pursue the heart issues behind the bad behavior.
Family worship is a Christian discipline like any other. But it’s a long-lost discipline. It is obedience to Deuteronomy 6:6-7. “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
We all have core values. They drive us. They are the reason we do what we do. We exercise because we value our health. We save money because we value preparedness. What is the mission of Wildwood Church? It’s the mission of every church since Jesus left. It’s the Great Commission! Listen to how we believe the Lord would have us fulfill the Great Commission in our specific time and location.
The Holy Spirit gives us life here and now, but that’s not all He does. He will also give life to our mortal bodies on the day of resurrection! We know this will happen because God has already shown His resurrection power when He raised Jesus from the dead!
Do you know that if you are in Christ, you have the presence of Christ through His Spirit in you?! And because He dwells in you, He gives life! Not only life in eternity, but life here and now!
In Christ, we receive a new identity. That doesn’t stop the enemy from throwing our old identity back in our face, though. It’s in those moments we need to remind ourselves of who we are and where we stand. We read of this identity change and positional change in Romans 8:4-11.
There is no two-class Christianity. Every single Christian has to fight the flesh and depend on the Holy Spirit every day. If there were a two-class system, the Apostle Paul would definitely be in the elite status. Yet, in this passage he shares his own experiences with fighting the flesh. If Paul had to fight the flesh, how can any of us imagine we don’t?
