Can Your Faith Save You?

James is clear, genuine faith will produce good works.

We are not saved by works, but we are saved for works. We’re not saved because we do good, we do good because we have been saved. We are not saved because we have changed our lives, our lives are changed because we are saved. If we reverse this or if works do not follow our “faith,” we’re in for a world of hurt on judgment day.

Mercy Triumphs

When we sin, we break the whole Law of God; we are utterly dependent on His mercy every day.

In this passage, James rocks the world of anyone who thinks they can keep most of the Law. James says you break it at all, you break it all. The Law reflects God’s perfect character and therefore the standard of obedience is perfection. But the sad reality is that no one has ever kept the law perfectly, except Jesus. When we sin, we break the whole Law of God; we are utterly dependent on His mercy every day. Thankfully, mercy triumphs over judgment!

The Sin of Partiality

A church that values relevance over Truth will eventually find itself with neither.

Isn’t it tempting to play nice with people you think you can curry favor? Especially if that person, or that group of people have resources and influence and can make life easier for you? It seems the first church responded to their difficulties of being scattered throughout the Roman world and being harassed by nearly everyone by trying to win the favor of wealthy people. In today’s passage James addressed the all-too-common problem of the sin of partiality. The church compromised its values, disregarded the Word of God, and gave special treatment to rich people. Most likely they were responding to the pain of being rejected and treated as irrelevant in their communities. Perhaps they thought giving the rich what the rich wanted would earn some acceptance within the community. The problem is that a church that values relevance over Truth will eventually find itself with neither. James exhorts the church to show no partiality as you hold the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Doers of the Word

If you want to know your religion is one that pleases God, don’t consider how much you know, consider what you’re doing with what you know.

In James 1:22-27, we James confronts cold religiosity. He rejects a religion that boasts of knowledge but lacks self-control, compassion for others, and personal holiness. Genuine Christians will not only hear the Word, but they will also be doers who act upon the Word they have heard. Their lives will reflect their heart that approaches the Word seeking transformation.

Do Not Be Deceived

We’re all tempted to sin, but we’ve only got ourselves to blame. Only good comes from God!

Those who demonstrate that they genuinely love God by enduring through the various trials of life will be rewarded with eternal life. During trials, some will want to accuse God of tempting them to sin. Not the case, says James. Rather, there’s only one person to blame when we are tempted to sin: ourselves. Only good comes from God. The greatest evidence of His goodness is our very salvation. Salvation is a good and perfect gift given to us wholly by God’s own will. What we could never achieve ourselves due to our sin nature has been achieved for us through the word of truth.
